Introduction
Posted By: brian (4/21/2007 7:17:30 PM)
In November, 2001, we had a guest speaker for a weekend at church who challenged us to consider things that the Bible taught. In particular, he asked us to look closely at what we believed and at what the Bible said. If those two things were not the same, then we needed to reconsider the things that we believed.

As he continued teaching over the weekend, we confirmed many of the things that we held to, but also discovered that some things we had always taken for granted were not necessarily supported by scripture. Specifically, we discovered there is much scripture, both in the Old and the New Testaments, that discusses a future kingdom. Many times, it turns out, we assume that various teachings are about eternity in heaven, when in fact the context demands that we understand the teaching as being about the Millenial Kingdom, or the future Messianic Kingdom.

Since that time, we have done much studying and reading about the doctrine of the kingdom. What we have found has both excited us and caused us great alarm. The excitement comes from understanding scriptures that had always seemed contradictory to us. The alarm comes from the realization that many of the warning passages in scripture, that we always assumed were addressed to the unsaved, were in fact addressed to believers.

Scripture teaches a high level of accountability. We cannot simply become Christians, and then continue living like the world, and not expect there to be consequences.

The articles contained in this blog were first written by Brian Twitchell and posted on his personal blog. They have been reformatted and adapted to fit this venue of the First Baptist Church website, to help explain the things that we believe. We trust you will carefully read and prayerfully consider the ideas that are expounded on here.
