Unity We see ourselves primarily as a small piece of the body of Christ in Kingfield. This is reflected most clearly in our weekly bulletins, which carry the phrase "Welcome to this meeting of a piece of the church in Kingfield." It is our belief that the local church consists of all the believers in the Kingfield area. Some of these believers meet in our building, while others meet in other buildings, and still others meet in homes or in no formal gathering. This concept of the unity of the body is fundamental to the proper functioning of the church, and is one of our core beliefs. In John chapter 17, it is clear that Christ places high value on the unity of the believers. It is our desire to work towards that level of unity that he describes in his prayer. (See John 17:20 - 21) Role of the Pastor We believe that the role of the pastor of a church should be that of a shepherd to the flock. In particular, we do not believe that a pastor's responsibility is to the community. Rather, his responsibility is to the believers in the community. Ephesians 4 talks about the purpose of the various gifts, including that of pastoring, and describes that purpose as "to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ." (Eph 4:12 - 13) This clearly indicates that pastoring is a gift to be exercised rather than a position to be filled. The responsibility of the pastor is to prepare, train, and encourage the believers towards maturity, which will include, among other things, reaching out to the lost in the community and the world. In particular, the pastor's responsibility for reaching the lost is equal to, but not greater than, the responsibility of every other believer to reach the lost. The Importance of the Family We place a high priority on the importance of the family structure. We believe that God has ordained the structure of the church to reflect the structure of the family unit. As husbands have a scriptural responsibility to be the head of their households, likewise the men of the church have the responsibility to provide Christ-like leadership of the church. Because of the importance we place on the family unit, events or activities that are planned are done so bearing in mind the impact on the family. An example of this is our age-integrated Sunday School. Conclusion We have been without a formal pastor for 13 years, and during that time we have tried to follow God's leading in the direction the church has gone. These items listed here are some of the beliefs that God has brought us to over the years. This document is not intended to convey all of our beliefs, but rather those items that we consider to be foundational to how we function as a church body. |
